HISTORY

The paintings (below) at the front of the sanctuary
were created by Sheridan United Church member Shirley Erskine.

GENESIS

This painting is based on bible verse, Genesis 1, verse 1 - 3. “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be Light: and there was light.”

This painting was done with that image in mind. The roundness of the world coming out of the void, turning a corner and moving towards lightness and knowledge. The rest of the verses in Genesis describes how the world was divided into night and day.

This beautiful world is our home and heritage. It is up to the people living on her to take care to preserve the beauty and health of our God given creation.

RESURRECTION

This painting shows the vacant cross after the crucifixion of Jesus. The glow of his teachings still resounding from the centre heart of the empty cross. The vacant cross is a symbol of light and the wisdom of his teachings left for mankind to follow.

Quietly listen.

Both paintings are done using inks and hand dyed Japanese rice papers that were fixed to a stretch canvas.

The intention was to mimic stained glass.
